California's plan to provide food assistance

California is about to become the first state in the US to provide food aid to some unauthorized immigrants.

However, supporters argue that it is insufficient.

The state Senate passed a budget measure on Monday that included Gov.

Gavin Newsom's proposal to let immigrants 55 and older who are presently denied food stamp benefits to get them.

Food4All advocates believe that while the idea is a step toward their long-term goal of expanding food aid to all immigrants,

regardless of age or status, it leaves a majority of low-income, illegal immigrants behind.
